Traveling from Florence to the Port of Civitavecchia to hop on a Cruise

Anyone have experience with this route? We end our tour in Florence and have booked a Med cruise that starts the same day (tour ends at breakfast in Florence, ships departs Civitavecchia 5pm). We are looking hard at rail to get to Civitavecchia. Rail times seem to fit well. Thoughts?

We have left on cruises from Civitavecchia several times but have always arrived the night before. You'll need transport from the train station to the cruise terminal and it can be hectic on sail days, especially if there are multiple ship departures. There are transport options but lots of competition for them. You might look into arranging that section of your journey ahead of time. We have also used the Italian rail system on many trips, including a trip from Livorno to Florence and return in one day, which worked but was a little stressful because of how tightly it was scheduled. Your trip is longer. We have not had any problems with train travel in Italy but there is always a possibility of strikes, which show up at seemingly random times and last for uncertain periods. I would feel more comfortable with an extra day between the end of a tour and a sail date but if your dates are locked in, you might look into a backup and live with the uncertainty.

There are very frequent train options (one change in Rome required), and many are about 2h45m to 3h15m. Just consider that from the Civitavecchia train station to the Cruise port is a longish ~2 mile walk, so consider a taxi or a bus. Train company website is below.

Hi Graig and Nancy,

As far as I know there is not a direct train from Florence to Civitaveccchia and you probably have to switch the train in Rome, otherwise try to contact a transportation company we used in the past in Tuscany that I know also provide transfers like that:

Month of year and day of week? There is some risk, but it seems do-able. Frecciarossa to Rome, slow local back to Civitavecchia. I found the walk from the station hot and tedious. Are you going to the cruise terminal or using the port's pier busses? Perhaps a car service from Orvieto? But never heard of doing that.

Thanks to all for responding. We end our tour in Florence at breakfast, the same day we depart the port (at 5PM). If we catch a train by 10-11 am the train schedules all show us getting to Civitavecchia by about 1-2 pm. We could skip the breakfast and leave earlier, I suppose. I am counting on our tour guide to give us helpful advice when we meet her the first day of our tour. Yet, still somewhat of a concern.
