traveling from Bavaria to Rome - many options

In June, I'm traveling with my teenage sons. We're flying into Munich, then go Berchesgaden (sp?) - hoping to get there bybus. Then, they want to go to Rome for a few days and then on to Paris and Normandy. I'm looking at cheap airlines or overnight train from Berchesgaden to Rome. Do you think I should leave from Munich or there are a few towns closer to where we'll be like Salzberg, Kufstein and Rosenheim. But then what would we do with our luggage while we toured Eagle's Nest and hiked around.

Paula, You might consider using either Munich or Salzberg as a "home base", and taking day trips to Berchtesgaden and other places in that area. That would not only take care of the issue of "what to do with your luggage", and especially with Munich it would also facilitate the trip to Rome. For touring the Eagle's Nest and other historic sights in that area, you might consider either These tours or These tours. In addition to the Eagle's Nest, the Dokumentation Centre and Bunkers just outside Berchtesgaden are very interesting. There's also a Salt Mine that can be toured there. Have a look at the This Website for information on budget flights to Rome. A flight will be about 4.5 hours, while an overnight train trip from Munich will be 12-hours or more. Using a budget airline would be the easiest method IMO. For the trip from Rome to Paris, have a look at EasyJet as they have flights from Rome Ciampino to Paris Orly. That's probably the method I'd use. Good luck with your planning!

I don't know anything about bus service, but there is hourly train service from Munich to Berchtesgaden. You'll need to make one connection at Freilassing. You can take the train from Berchtesgaden to Rosenheim (one connection in Freilassing) in time to catch the direct Munich-Rome CNL night train which stops in Rosenheim. See the detailed timetables on the German Rail site. I wouldn't backtrack to Munich just to fly on a budget airline to Rome. It makes more sense to me to book the CNL train from Rosenheim to Rome well in advance (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site and get a discount fare for either a couchette or a sleeper for you and your sons. You'll save the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing. But I like night trains and can sleep well on them. Rome-Paris on a budget airline would be a very good way to go.
