I am an older woman ending a trip in Florence with a friend. We are starting our trip in Rome, then Florence...the flights are easier for us out of Florene Malpenso........but is it a difficult/long train ride?

No, it is fairly easy. It takes a 1h40min on the high-speed Frecciarossa train to Milano Centrale, then another 50min in a regional train from Milano Centrale to the airport. The station is within the airport. They have 2 daily trains that from Firenze to Malpensa that don't require a transfer.
