We were thinking about spending the evening of Tuesday, 12 Oct 2010 in Siena, traveling to Siena from Rome. What is the best way to get from Rome to Siena? The 2010 books says Sena bus, but the website says there is no options on the 12th. Is there no bus service in October? As an alternative, we are meeting friends on Wednesday somewhere in Tuscany (location TBD) and were hoping to find someplace nearby to spend an evening. After Tuscany we are headed to Florence so we were hoping to find another accessible town to spend Tuesday evening. Siena seemed like a good option. thanks for your help and sorry if my question is complicated. -Annie
My husband and I will be doing the same thing, two days earlier. We plan to take the train, especially since we are traveling on the Sunday and buses are limited. According to the book the train runs nearly hourly, takes 3-4 hours, and requires a transfer in Chiusi. I was going to buy tickets when I got there, since the train website just won't work for me.
Annie, oddly, I don't see any bus schedules beyond 8/30 on the www.sena.it website for the Rome to Siena run. I can see them up through 8/31. I wouldn't worry too much at this point as the SENA bus does run several buses a day from the Rome Tiburtina train station (across the street) to Siena. Alternatively, you can take the Trenitalia train from Rome Termini to Siena as well. Note that the train station is about a mile down a slight hill from the city walls. The bus takes you right up to the city wall.
You may try taking the SITA Rapida bus from Siena to Florence (runs hourly, takes about 1 hour 15 minutes), then take a train from Florence to Rome's Termini station (there's a couple of direct trains that takes about 1 hour 40 minutes).
Oops, I initially read this as going from Siena to Rome (I guess because that's what I'm doing in October) [INVALID] please flip-flop my instructions to take the train from Termini to Florence, then the bus from Florence to Siena.
Annie, The site is being worked on. Go to timetables and fares. There are buses running.
