Traveling Assisi Area Dec 1-8

I will be traveling to Assisi..and not sure if I should book ahead of time or wait until I arrive..I am assuming this is low season..and hoping to find sweet little places to stay..would rather see in person..is this crazy? Would it be hard to find a great affordable place once there or should I book ahead of time? Any suggestions? Thank You.

It will depend on what part of Assisi you are wanting to stay. There is the beautiful, quaint "old" Assisi hill town or it's "newer" and larger counterpart below.
It is too far to walk between the two places so you would have to take public transit to travel between the two areas - and when I say too far to walk, I am guessing 3-5 kms apart. I would recommend trying to stay in the old town which will definitely have fewer accommodations so you might want to book ahead. Most accommodations have reviews from others who have stayed there so look around and read the reviews.

Check and see if there are any major Catholic holidays at that time. We went during Easter once and it was insane! The only holiday I can think of off the top of my head is on Dec. 13.

You'll definitely want to stay in "upper" Assisi. The lower town in the valley is called Santa Maria Degli Angeli although many people regard it as "lower Assisi" and is where the train station is. Almost all the sites worth seeing are in upper Assis.

Thank you everyone for responding & deciphering...upper vs lower!

I know the feast of the Immaculate Conception is December 8...will that be a problem? I was thinking of traveling to Loretto that day.

I have read many reveiws and it is getting dizzing..the places I am considering are the Berti, San Rufino and De Rina....Anybody ever stay at these? The Berti has the best reveiws..

Feedback very much welcomed!

We stayed at the Hotel Umbra last summer and really enjoyed it. It is just off the main piazza, down a quiet side street. The rooms look like they were decorated by nuns in the 70s, but are very clean and comfortable, and many have a balcony with lovely view out over the valley. The staff is very friendly and helpful; there is a pleasant lounge; buffet breakfast included, they also have a great restaurant. Reasonable rates. For those going in the summer, the restaurant moves out to a beautiful terrace.

We stayed at the Hotel Ideale, which is at the opposite end of town from the Cathedral. Great little hotel with a friendly staff.
We had a nice room with a great balcony - it was really a terrace - and had wonderful views of the castle, town and valley. It cost about 35 US dollars, and included breakfast.
