Traveling around the Amalfi Coast

I am staying in Naples for a few days this summer - I know, it is not the cleanest, prettiest city, but I am a student, and Sorrento does not have a cheap, clean, reputable hostel - and I was planning on spending one of my days in Positano, just relaxing on the beach, shopping, etc.

A couple of questions: does anyone know how much it costs to take the train to Sorrento from Naples? Or the cost of the bus from Sorrento to Positano? Also, if I just want to spend a day relaxing, is Sorrento as good of an option as Positano? Does it have a beach, good shopping, etc? Positano looks so picturesque, but if Sorrento is just as nice, and easier to get to, I might spend my day there instead.

Thanks very much for your help!

Can't help you with the cost of train or bus, we had a car and stayed in Sorrento, but another option you might check out is the ferry system from Naples to Sorrento, Positano, etc. Sorrento does not have a beach. Positano has a nice beach and some shopping too. You can also catch the bus from Positano to Amalfi or even the other way to Sorrento. Sorrento has good shopping. Happy travels.

You mentioned there aren't any good hostels in Sorrento. Have you looked at Mami Cammilla? It is a cooking school that also has dorm beds to rent.

I haven't stayed here but plan to in October. It looked really nice to me.

Thanks for your replies.

Lauren - I had not come across this hostel, and it looks really good - to bad I already booked my place in Naples! I will keep it in mind for next time though.

The circumvesuviana was about €5, and the bus from Sorrento to Positano was about €3-4.

I preferred Positano to Sorrento - smaller, prettier, but a lot of stairs! It's about two hours from Naples, but I think it's definitely the trip. Positano's beach is definitely better than Sorrento's (doesn't really have one), but the shopping is about the same.

For future reference, there is a decent hostel in Sorrento called Ostello le Sirene, and a great one in Positano called Ostello Brikette.
