traveling Amalfi Coast

Hi, I need help. We want to spend 5-6 days in April on Amalfi Coast in April and then a couple days on Capri. I am so overwhelmed trying to plan. I first thought we would stay in Ravello, but Sorrento seems to come widely recommended as a better base for Amalfi coast. We are open to having a car for ease of travelling between villages but I keep reading that is more trouble than worth. I just can't seem to figure out how to travel between villages easily. It seems like our who time will be spent on the road. What are the best transportation options? Thanks

My personal recommendations:
1-do not rent a car-"ease of travel" should not be used in the same sentence when it comes to cars and Amalfi!
2-use Positano as your base-we rented an apartment for a week and did day trips from there
3-use ferries for town hopping but know April may be a little early for them to run on a regular basis
4-Capri is very touristy and was our least favorite of the towns

No car. Even in April, you will regret it. Good thing is that the SITA bus route should not be overrun that time of year, allowing you access from Sorrento to Salerno.

It is true that you definitely have to factor travel time between villages into the decision as to whether to visit them at all. But check online the SITA routes and you'll see that it shouldn't be THAT much of a problem--you just have to allow more time than you would think. A 10 mile ride across the peninsula can take 45-60 minutes, easily.

Ditto: ditch the car and use public transport.

IMHO, Capri can be "touristy" or not depending on what you do there (the Blue Grotto is touristy: Villa Jovis is not) and/or whether you stay there or just day trip it. We had fun trekking around the island on foot (much of it is pedestrianized) to some of the corners that a lot of people don't venture to.

Sorrento is NOT on the Amalfi Coast. It is on the Bay of Naples. It is a well situated town for visiting Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. It also offers beautiful views of Vesuvius. Take a bus to the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento; you don't want a car on the AC.
Use buses and ferries to move around the AC.
The main square and marina of Capri get very crowded during the day. However, it is very easy to escape the crowds. Stay in a hotel along the pedestrian walkways, between Punta Tragara and
Giardini di Agusto. We loved staying at La Minerva, great service and beautiful views of the sea.

You should read up on all of these places (look at pics, too!) to see what you want.
While opinions vary greatly, here are some generalities:
Those who day trip to Capri often say an overnight would have been better.
From Sorrento to the AC is a long bus ride or a ferry ride--not ideal, whereas it is a good location to visit Pompeii. So, those who want it all in one place often choose it. However, it is not a seaside village on the Amalfi coast with all that entails.
Amalfi-Positano-Ravello are close enough together to reasonably see all three via bus and ferry (you can even walk between Amalfi and Ravello if reasonably fit), and Capri can be reached from them.
As I said in your other post, you can see Pompeii en route. If you have an idea of your arrival and departure times, we can advise further.
April is in season on the AC--no way I would spend for parking or sit in traffic. Plus, the driver does not really get to enjoy the view.

Sorrento is miles from the Amalfi Coast!

If you plan to go to Pompeii Scavi, Sorrento is convenient. Where are you starting from? If you can get an early start from Roma or Napoli, you can stop in Pompeii on your way to the Amalfi Coast (Pompeii has baggage storage).

On the Amalfi Coast, I like Praiano, Minori or Ravello.

I've been posting a lot of advice on this area since I went this past May. It IS overwhelming! There seem to be so many options and opinions on where to stay and what's best. So, I want to start with "Don't worry about it too much." The entire region is beautiful and interesting, and you'll probably feel like you would do things a little differently a second time around. It's hard to go real wrong (except renting a car, that would be real wrong.)

That said, if visiting Pompeii/Herculaneum/Naples are priorities then I highly recommend a couple nights in Sorrento (or Naples). These important sites are convenient from Sorrento and long, hot, crowded day-trips from almost anywhere else. The ferries, buses and Circumvesiana are easy to use and convenient. I also would not do it all from Sorrento, but base on the Amalfi coast side for part of your trip as well. The more convenient you can plan your daily excursions, the better.

Personally, while I loved Capri and found it breathtaking, I also felt like a day was plenty. Spending a couple nights there sounds a little excessive. It's not like it's exceptionally more beautiful than anyplace else you'll be visiting. The towns are small, and quickly explored. Also, you're kind of stuck on the island. Having access to the mainland exclusively by ferry really limits your ability to be flexible, and that flexibility is a real asset in this region. I'd rather stay somewhere like Positano and day-trip in, and decide if you feel like another day-trip would be worth it.

Not true. From Sorrento bus station--which is also the train station--to Positano it's just under an hour. Maybe another 45 minutes tops to Amalfi. You could easily use Sorrento as a base and do your thing on the A.C.

"Long" is a subjective term, and 45 minutes can feel much longer on that bus. When choosing to wake up ON the Amalfi coast or ride an hour, I choose the former.

I agree with Val...commuting from Sorrento is over three hours, perhaps closer to four, not counting waiting time for transportation.

A few things to the OP about their post:

A rental car would not provide you any ease of travel. If there is some reason to have one a car is not out of the question but forget about it somehow making daily visiting different towns any easier than public transit, it will not be any easier and definitely not cheaper to have a car.

The bus system is the easy way to travel between the villages, no worrying about hunting down a parking spot which will also be costly and since you won't be driving you can enjoy the view.

Don't stress about the bus crowding, it will be April so not terrible and if you are not laid back and willing to deal with some delays Italy, especially south of Rome is not a good location to travel to.

Though probably on a limited schedule in April you should be able to take advantage of ferries between some areas as well.

The little towns are separated by a few miles, so you will hardly be spending most of your time on the road.
Look on a map and you will start to make more sense of the small area you are talking about. Ravello is really pretty, it is just tiny so not much to see for 5 nights and to get there you have to take a winding roads up the mountain from the town of Amalfi, it will make it inconvenient to see other places if staying in Ravello. if you want to chill and relax with breathtaking views Ravello is a good spot, if you want a base to visit other towns from Ravello is a bad one.

Some people love Sorrento, some do not love it but still recommend it as it is the best logistically for the area. If you include in the same trip Naples, Pompeii and other sites, it really provides much easier base location to see these other areas from. Mainly due to it's larger size it just has more transport options.
I liked but did not love Sorrento, I loved Positano and frequently recommend it but also recommend Sorrento to others when I don't think Positano is as good a fit for their time and plans.
I find most with a less glowing opinion of Positano only day tripped to it, since most of it's charm is exploring it's backstreets and little areas by foot without the masses and that is not going to happen mid day.
It is small but car free so by foot still takes some time to explore all of it, is just more charming, quaint and picturesque than Sorrento in my opinion.
Sorrento has majestic breathtaking views especially from up on it's cliffs looking toward the Bay of Naples and good shopping.
Sorrento since it just flat out works better for quick visits and certain things. In your case I would recommend Positano, you can reach Capri from a ferry that should be running a couple of times a day in April from Positano-Capri.
The Positano-Capri ferry is much more subject to weather/wave cancellation than the Sorrento-Capri ferry.

I see value in staying overnight in Capri, and really 2 nights usually just means 1 full day there so that makes sense to me. All of those crowds during mid day will be long gone by sunset and you will literally have the island mostly to yourself in the evening and following morning which could be very nice and give you a different perspective than most other travelers ; great for photos too.

With 5-6 nights, I'd spend 2 or 3 in Sorrento then the other 2 or 3 in a town along the coast - having to take the bus from Sorrento everyday to maybe the far reaches of the coast could get tiresome very fast. Then having to wait for buses to arrive.

A lot of people say Capri is nice after the day trippers leave, so maybe you could look at staying there two nights? Not sure what it would be like in April. We had 3 nights on the coast a few years ago and stayed in Atrani, which was just a 10 min walk to Amalfi. Our fav spot was Ravello, but with only two full days (one of which we did a private car tour which gave us a little time in Ravello, Sorrento and Positano), and the other day we mostly spent in Ravello/Amalfi) we didn't have any chance to see much else.

I'd love to go back for a week and would probably split my time between maybe Positano then somewhere further along the coast - Atrani again or further to Minori/Maiori, or even to Ravello for a few nights.

And the only thing I would say - someone mentioned walking between Amalfi and Ravello - if you wanted to do that, I'd recommend hiking DOWN from Ravello to Amalfi - we did the walk down from Ravello to Atrani and by the time I got to the bottom, my legs were trembling. A LOT of stairs and not much level walking. I think walking up would be a killer...unless you are used to stairs. Had we tried to walk up it, I probably would have had a heart attack (and I'm in OK shape for a middle aged person). But it was a gorgeous walk and lots of beautiful vistas

OK, you want an easy and fun walk?

On the bus ride from Sorrento to Positano in March, we prematurely got off 2 stops early by accident--don't know what it was named, but we were supposed to 'de-bus' further on at Sponda. We didn't, thought we were stranded, it had just stopped raining, so we decided to walk. Maybe 1.0-1.5 miles, but all at a gentle grade downhill, along the cliff sidewalk, which had rails. Took our time, snapped some incredible pics of the sun peeking through the fog with the 'mountain houses' (I call them) in the background.

Finally reached the Sponda stop--where we would either take the bus farther to Amalfi or back to Sorrento. Found the only place open that time of year was nearby Li Galli Bar, where we had wonderful fried calamari and antipasto--what a find!

One of the highlights of our trip, and it was because of a mistake.
