My friend and I are planning a trip to Rome and then to San Gimignano in early October. Do you think we should be worried about making this trip in light of the recent quake? Thank you.
Why?? That area was unaffected or are you thinking that an earthquake will hit your travel area? Do you worry about being hit by lightning?
Not unless you were planning to stay in one of the devastated villages, which you are not. Might help to get out a map and see how far from the quake area you will be...which is quite far. But no one can predict what might happen anywhere: terrible storm, lightning, flood, tornado. Just go!
Or, put another way, lynna, do you specifically not visit Los Angeles or San Francisco because you are worried about earthquakes? Both LA and San Francisco are well overdue for a much bigger earthquake than the 6.2 this week - sad and devastating as it was.
It is human nature to worry about current events but it may help to put them in perspective.
I would hope that tourists are making plans to avoid the earthquake impacted areas. I would think the authorities and the Red Cross have enough to deal with just assisting the locals. They surely don't need any outsiders unless part of a relief organization.
You will be going nowhere close to the impacted areas.

This is very true. The authorities have asked people to steer clear as aftershocks continue to cause damage. Buildings continue to crumble.
We will be in Sorrento in a few weeks for September and October and know we are not close to the area of the earthquake-and as been advised for people to not visit the area now as roads are impassable and tourists would be in the way- I would hope people visiting nearby cities can find a Red Cross and donate blood for the many injured people.
We are currently in Italy and just left Tuscany/Umbria. No problems at all and you should not alter travel plans unless you were planning to visit any of the towns directly impacted by the quake.
