My family and I will be traveling from Sorrento to Alberobello by car in July. Do all of us need a international license?

Technically speaking it is an International Driving Permit and must be accompanied by your current driver's license. You must have both.

Frank and Nigel are correct... don't go online and order an International Driver's License. They are totally useless and in many places often illegal! You need an International Driving Permit or IDP. Many rental vendors may not ask, but if you get stopped at a Random Traffic Stop the police certainly will!

joanne, As the others have mentioned, each driver will require the compulsory I.D.P. (don't forget to take your home D.L. as well). You can obtain an I.D.P. and any AAA office. I'm not sure where Fort Montgomery is located, but there appears to be a number of offices in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse. Two Passport-style photos are required, and issuing offices can usually take care of that as well. The cost is very reasonable (~$25) and the I.D.P. is valid for one year. Happy travels!
