travel within the city of Milan

Hello I will be in the city of Milan, and was wondering how to travel within the city itself?

What is the best way (cost efficient) to get from the airport to a hotel?
also what public transportation can we use to get between sites in Milan?

Thanks for your help ahead of time!

Jodie,
That would depend on the location of your hotel.

You can easily travel by using the Metro (subway) or the tram/bus-- same cost.

You can buy tickets at newspaper stands or tabacchi shops. You can buy the day ticket & you can use it for 24 hours on both the Metro or the trams.

I'd suggest calling your hotel to find out best way to get there.

It may be more convenient to take a taxi to your hotel-- again depending where your hotel is.

Edit: Which airport? If you will be arriving at the Malpensa Airport, you can take the Malpensa Express(ME) train ( takes about 52 minutes) into Milan.
You can buy this ticket at the train ticket counter at the airport.
The ME travels to 2 different train stations; Milano Centrale or Nord Cadorna train station (closer to historical center) so make sure you take the correct train. Don't forget to validate (ME) ticket before boarding train to avoid hefty fines!
You also need to validate tram/bus ticket when you board the tram/bus.

Hi,
thanks for the response,
We arrive at the Malpensa Airport (MXP) and are to go to the location Via Ludovico di Breme. it says about 34 minutes driving.
Do you know how much taxis are ? I have read it can be around 80 euros.

Is there a bus that goes from there to city area?
Some cities we travel have direct shuttles or buses straight to the city.
thanks

Jodie,

I would not take a taxi from the Malpensa Airport to your hotel but I would recommend taking the taxi from the train station.

So you will take the Malpensa Express train (€12pp) to Milano Centrale (Milan's Central Station) then take the taxi from there to your hotel.
According to this website; Rome2rio, the taxi from Milano Centrale to your hotel should cost you $12-15.

Check this website to see the different options to your hotel:http://www.rome2rio.com/s/Milano-Centrale-Station/Via-Ludovico-di-Breme-Milano-Italy

EDIT: Taxi is your best option from Milano Centrale as it's only about 7 minutes (I assume without traffic)-- besides that way you won't have to lug all your luggage in the Metro.

The Metro is very convenient & easy to learn.

Also, for the Malpensa Express train, does it make several stops along the way? I cant tell on the website. If it leaves every 30 minutes or so from the airport, I am trying to get off the Bolvisa stop.

thanks

Yes, the Malpensa Express leaves the airport every 30 minutes & it makes a few stops but I don't recall seeing that stop.

Is that the stop recommended by the hotel?

Jodie,

You mean Bovisa, right?

Yes, it looks like it does stop at Bovisa.
To tell you the truth, when I've taken the Malpensa Express train, I don't really pay attention to all the stops as I'm only focused on either getting to Milano Centrale or to the airport.

You can see it here: http://www.rome2rio.com/s/Milan-Malpensa/Bovisa

Use trenitalia website & type;

From: Malpensa Aeroporto

to: Milano Nord Bovisa

It's the 2nd stop once you leave the airport ( 30-35 mins) but make sure you board the Malpensa Express heading to Milano Centrale not Cadorna station !

Priscilla gave you the info from the airport to the city. Take the train. Malpensa is far and taxis are exorbitant (I don't think 80 euro are enough).
Within the city you have plenty of transit options. Milan has more than NYC. You can take the subway, city buses and tramway trolleys, commuter suburban trains (over 20 commuter and national train stations in the city), taxis, walk. The network is extensive so it depends on where you need to go and there will be plenty of choices.

All Malpensa Express trains call at Bovisa; it is a mandatory stop.

David,

This is the information from the Malpensa Express website: http://www.trenord.it/en/the-lines/malpensa-express.aspx

Is this incorrect?

MILANO CADORNA <-> MALPENSA

  • 36 direct journeys per day (without intermediate stops) with a journey time of just 29 minutes.

  • 42 journeys with intermediate stops, allowing passengers to make connections, at the stations of Milano Bovisa-Politecnico, Saronno and
Busto Arsizio, with a journey time of 36 minutes.

I took this train this past October and the journey from M. Cadorna> Malpensa took 29 mins and there were no (intermediate) stops.

When I checked the trenitalia website, the Malpensa Express( ME) going to Milano Centrale, always stops at Bovisa, however,
not all the ME trains going directly to the Cadorna Station stop at Bovisa.

For example;

ME train (Regionale #326) leaving MXP @ 08:26 & arrives @ Cadorna Station @ 09:02 ( journey time =36mins) and it does stop at Busto Arsizio Nord (08:33) , Saronno(08:43) and Milano Nord Bovisa(08:56)

Then there is ME train ( Regionale # 328) leaving MXP @ 09:03 & arrives @ Cadorna Station@ 09:32 ( journey time= 29 mins.) **without* any intermediate stops.*

Each successive Malpensa Express train going directly to Cadorna Station does not stop at Bovisa until the
ME train( Regionale # 346) leaving MXP @ 13:26 and arriving @ Cadorna Station @ 14:02 with the same intermediate stops as listed above.

In summary:

So, unless the information given in the trenitalia is outdated, there are some Malpensa Express trains heading to Cadorna Station that make intermediate stops but some that do not, however, every Malpensa Express train leaving MXP and heading to Milano Centrale do make intermediate stops & always stops at Milano Nord Bovisa.

The bottom line...
I'd hate for Jodie or anyone else, to take the Malpensa Express going to Cadorna at a time when it will not stop at Bovisa, then she would have to wait for another train that will take her there, or take the Metro, or a taxi to get to her destination.

thank you everyone for your time and detailed answers... I am blown away by your kindness!

Yes Bovisa is closest to our hotel than from Milan Central, Cadorna, or Garibaldi. (but only by several minutes driving ... some within 3 minutes )
So trying to find the train that goes to Bovisa is our best bet to get a taxi that would drive to the hotel and save time/euros.

Would I be able to ask a person at the train station if that particular train stops at Bovisa?

thanks

is it important to purchase the train tickets ahead of time?
I am guessing not because we do not know if there are any unforeseen delays for flights/ etc......

thanks

Jodie,

There is really no advantage in purchasing the Malpensa Express (ME) train tickets ahead of time as the price is the same €12pp.

Check the trenitalia website to see all the train times. You will just need to type as follows:

From: Malpensa Aeroporto

To: Milano Nord Bovisa

To be safe, I'd just take the ME train heading to Milano Centrale as these trains always stop at the Milano Nord Bovisa station.

Here is Robertos's response to my question regarding the Malpensa Express trains:

"Most trains from MXP to Cadorna are non stop. The only exception is in
the mornings or evenings at rush hour, when they make stops along the
way, also at Bovisa. Trains from MXP to C.le always stop at Bovisa.
See the PDF timetable below."
http://www.trenord.it/media/1305613/mxp_milano-malpensa_aeroporto.pdf

BTW, Roberto is a Florentine who now lives in the USA & he is very knowledgeable and always gives very practical & helpful information about traveling in Italy & Europe.
