Travel vest vs money belt

I haven't seen much commentary about travel vests. We're off to Italy in a few days for a month. Has anyone had a negative experience with a travel vest being insecure for valuables?

I love both my travel vest and my scottevest hoodie. But they're really different from a money belt. A vest is good for things like cameras, extra batteries, dictionary, map.... But there are times you will take it off. And security at d'Orsay has required me to empty all those pockets. I use both.

Another ScottEVest fan (which is also a jacket) here but I also bring a chest pouch in case it gets too hot or it is inappropriate for a vest but I most often stick with the vest. I keep the important stuff in the inner pockets.

khatiba, It's difficult to compare Travel Vests with Money Belts in terms of "security". There are many different designs of Vests, with pockets located in different locations, some using Velcro and some using zippers to close the pockets. Some Vests may provide good security, while others could be easily accessed by a skilled Pickpocket. If you decide to use a Travel Vest, I would still recommend using a Money Belt.

I'm sorry, but I'm not at all sure whether Khatiba is a male or female person. If she is a female, I have no suggestions. If he is a male, I suggest a very functional security compartment is the modestly-sized pouch that fits under one's trousers and is secured by a loop (khaki and black loops are usually part of the device) through which one's belt is threaded I've used them for years and they were much more useful to me that the conventional "stomache" money belt. If for a man. I also suggest that there are some useful "travel pants" with secure, zipped pockets inside the conventional front pockets. I keep my credit card(s) and larger local paper currency in that zipped pocket and a bit of walking-around change in the regular front pocket, and my passport in the aforementioned security pouch.

Got to agree with Jim. No vest is secure. I went from a money belt, to a neck pouch, to a "inside the pants wallet", and have never been happier. Simple, cheap, and really secure. My wife uses a Pac Safe back pak.

With a money belt, they can't take anything... but your dignity. I never use a money belt. They can be uncomfortable and sweaty. I use Columbia slacks that have a second pocket behind the first one. It is secured with a zipper. Passports, credit cards and cash go in there. A wallet with a few euro and expired credit card is in my pocket.
Even with these precautions, we've never had a problem.
