My wife and I plan to spend New Year's Eve 2019 in Venice Italy. In light of the current flooding is it still a good idea to go? Thanks
It is always a good time to go to Venice.
But
Winter can bring storms, rain, Aqua Alta (high water).....
If all 3 hit at the same time....issues will result.
No one can predict that with positive accuracy.
But you can help yourself in determining risk.
Research tide and moon charts for the days you intend to be in Venice. That will give you a glimpse into just how strong the potential is for an Aqua Alta.
Thank you so much. I have located tide schedules along with the lunar schedules. Now how to make sense of it all!! Thanks again
Think about staying outside of Venice and visit by train. If you run into problems, you won't have your trip ruined by the weather.
A friend lives in Venice. Philip Jones, and he writes novels set in Venice. Not sure if the 2019 acqua alta will be woven into a story.
Part of what he said in a facebook post, encouraging people to help.
“ And if you can’t manage either of those, well – if you happen to be visiting – just tread lightly. The city needs a bit of love right now. If you’re spending money in the shops, bars and restaurants – that will help. My favourite bar, “Corner Pub”, has been battered. When they’re open again, they’re going to need people to visit and buy Negronis. That sounds flippant, but it’s not meant to be.
I’ll finish by repeating my thanks to all those of you who’ve been in touch. It’s greatly appreciated.
The next posting, I sincerely hope, will be light-hearted nonsense again.”
Thanks you. I will be sure to look for your favorite bar. I would also like to know about your friends books I would like to read one or two before I travel. I also appreciate you describing the mood and demeanor of the citizens there. I have wondered if they would see tourist as welcome or as intruders so soon after their tragedy.
Sorry just saw Philip Jones
Phil wrote The Venetian Game, Vengeance in Venice, The Venetian Masquerade.
His next is Gothic Venice.
The Corner Pub is mentioned as the Church Pub in Masquerade.
You might also want to pack waterproof boots or lightweight galoshes, just in case, after you research the tide and lunar info. There'll be vendors on every corner if high water does hit when you're there, but you might prefer your own type (if your suitcase can handle it - ha ha). Also, another author who does a good job of describing Venice life is Donna Leon, if you like mysteries. I've read all of them and followed some of the routes taken by her Commissario Guido Brunetti. Plus there's lots of food descriptions!
Great suggestions! I actually bought Vengenance in Venice today and I have also read a book by the other author you mentioned thank you
