we plan to spend a couple ofdays in June in Bolzano, then we want to take the Bernina Express to Chur (then travel on into France). Is there any practical way to get from Bolzano to Tirano by public transport ? The only alternative we can find is via Lugano.
Chris, There are probably a few different ways to travel from Bolzano to Tirano by public transport. I'd probably go by train, although the shortest trip I could find was 6H:18M, with two changes in Milan and Verona. In order to take the Bernina Express you'd probably have to travel to Tirano (or somewhere close to that area) the day before. As I recall, the Bernina Express departs Tirano at about 14:00. One possibility would be to spend one night in Varenna on Lago di Como. The trip from Bolzano to Varenna is as short as 4H:51M (depending on which train is used), and the trip from there to Tirano is only 1H:26M. You could have a leisurely breakfast and still arrive in Tirano in lots of time for the Bernina Express. Happy travels!
