Travel to Siena and S. Gimignano from Montecatini T

I am in Monticatini Terme and was planning to travel by rental car to Sienna and San Gimignano for a day trip tomorrow which is Sunday. We have been told by our hotel everything will be closed and that we should head back early from Siena because of traffic.
Does anyone have any advice for us. Maybe another town to visit. We had hope to experience the Tuscany Country side. We are visiting Lucca on Tuesday.

Well, obviously if you go on a Sunday you cannot expect everything to be open. But museums will be open, churches open if busy, and in central tourist areas souvenir shops are likely to be open.
As for the traffic, it looks as an ordinary Sunday. There may be some traffic going back to Florence in late evening.

The duomo in Siena will be closed Sunday morning, so maybe visit San Gimignono in the morning and Siena in the afternoon/evening. Goggle the sights you plan to visit to confirm open hours for Sunday. I've found the hours listed to be pretty accurate.
