Travel to Rome during the Easter season

Rick mentioned in his blog that on "May 1rst, John Paul II is being beatified -- the final step before sainthood. The festivities will clog Rome with visitors and fill its hotels for days.)" We are thinking about traveling to Italy April 20th through May 2. Good Friday is April 22nd and Easter is April 24th. Any advice on whether we should go to the Vatican before Easter, say April 21rst or go after Easter and before May 1rst (when John Paul II is being beatified)? I'm thinking in terms of crowds and hotel room availability

At this late date, it may be trouble finding hotel rooms in Rome for either Easter or the beatification, and they will cost more.... Might be better to time your trip for after the beatification.

If you don;t have much latitude in dates, I'd say try to get lodging and see what the response is! You cannot "control" the crowds, but you can deal with them as long as you have a place to stay. Good luck!

Our daughter is in Spain on a student exchange program and her spring break is April 20th through May 1rst. So, our choice is to either go to Rome a few days before Easter (20th or 21rst, Wed or Thur) or finish up our trip in Rome right before beatification date of May 1rst. So, will it be more crowded the days before Easter or the days before beatification, just not sure?
