What is the best way to travel from Rome to Pompeii in October?
Not sure time of year really matters. You'll want to take the train, most likely. Rome2Rio will map out your options pretty well; you can then research ticket pricing and schedules on Trenitalia and other sites. Google Maps also can help guide your choices.
The best way would be teleportation. Aside from that, a freccia train to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi station.
Hello lisalill8003, and welcome to the forum!
You essentially have the choice of doing it yourself or taking an organized tour which will arrange transportation for you.
To do it yourself take the fast train from Rome to Naples and the local subway like Circumvesuviana train for about 30 minutes to Pompeii Scavi (may now be labelled Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri) which is right near the main entrance to the Pompeii ruins.
The fast train from Rome to Naples takes just over an hour while the cheaper Intercity train takes about 2 hours. Fast trains are cheaper if you book earlier but you are sacrificing flexibility for price so if you know when you want to head to Pompeii you can book ahead but might leave the return open and pay a bit more for flexibility and balance how fast a train you want versus how much you want to pay.
This is decent guide on getting to the Circumvesuviana station which is on the lowest level below the Napoli train station you will have just arrived in. The "Sorrento" train is the Pompeii train but you get off earlier.

Train tickets from Rome to Naples are here: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Use the Italian names Roma and Napoli for best results.
The site is big so allow at least several hours to explore and preferably all day or as much as you can take. In October hopefully the weather will be less hot and allow for more exploring than most people do in July and August.
Hope that helps, I'm sure there are many previous threads on this topic if you search these forums.
Have a great trip, I may see you there in October!
