Travel to Pompeii

We will be travelling from Rome to Pompeii. We will not have a car. Does the train run from Rome to Pompeii? Once in Pompeii how difficult is it to get to the ruins. Is it adviseable to go in a tour group or on our own?

You will see two stops on the CircumVesu map: Pompei and Pompei Scavi. Pompei is the town; Pompei Scavi ("Pompei Digs") is the one you want, it's the ruins.

We took fast train and also slow train from Rome to Naples, slow train 22 euro and fast 44 euro, took about 1/2 to 3/4 hour longer so we opted to save money on the slow train, that is just us. Be sure to validate ticket before you get on train, machine is just before you get to tracks or will pay hefty fine. Once you get to Naples you go downstairs to get the local train and get off at Pompeii. I seem to remember there might be two Pompeii stops so maybe someone else will give you advice on that. Takes about 1/2 to 3/4 hour. Train lets you off about 500 feet from entrance. Wear comfortable shoes, hat and take lots of water, it will be hot. I think you can pre-book guide if that is what you are looking for, if not you can do it on your own or there are many guides at the entrance, sorry can't remember cost, we did it on our own. Enjoy.

This is an extremely easy trip to make. Take a high speed train from Rome termini to Naples. Once in the Naples station go downstairs to catch the commuter train heading to Sorrento. After half an hour it will stop at the Pompeii Scavi station. This is where you want to get off. The ruins entrance are about a 5 minute walk up the street. The fast train from Rome to Naples is 44 euros but you may be able to get a cheaper mini fare if you buy in advance. It takes just over an hour to get to Naples. The commuter train will cost about 10 euros round trip. It usually departs from track 4 but check the overhead boards to make sure. There will be a list of stops above the door so you can keep track of where you are and when to get off. Donna
