Travel to Piedmont Area in Italy...looking for a small town similar to Cortona. Similar vibe...

Hi there! We will be traveling to Italy in May. Flying into Milan. We have been all over but not within the Piedmont area. We loved Cortona (Tuscany) and the quaintness of the town but still having the ability to walk around at night. We are looking for something similar in the Piedmont area so we can come back to town and not be isolated. We also don't want something too big. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Add also Barolo, Mombaldone, Cocconato, Monforte, Neive, Barbaresco, Castagnole delle Lanze.
All in the same general area of Alba.
Check them out online.

Piedmont Region Travelers! We too are planning a Sept trip to the region. Don’t know if this will give Margueritey any ideas but It seems most fly into Milan, we are flying into Geneva, another area we have not been whereas we have been to Tuscany (2x my favorite) and Dolomites.

Part of the trip is with two other couples so we have booked a VRBO for part of the trip. Below is what we have so far. Other than visiting Sacra St Michele, looking for ideas, towns, and wine tour guides for one or two days. Should we go north, to th coast??? We will have a car.

  • Day 1 - Geneva Marmont Hotel explore Geneva
  • Day 2 - Geneva Marmont Hotel explore Geneva
  • Day 3 - Chamonix Alpina Eclectic Hotel
  • Day 4 - 7 VRBO Piedmont - two days of wine tours
  • Day 8 - 11 Genova or Turin, or????
  • Day 12 - Geneva Hilton Geneva Return

Thank you for your experienced advice.

Hi! My fear with Switzerland in May is the weather. I have a good friend that is from Switzerland and she told me it can be foggy and rainy because of the mountains. Ended up booking Lyon after Alba and then going more South.

Torino might be larger than you’re seeking, but it is walkable and there’s a lot to see and do there. We loved the region, but did not have a car, so I’m interested in hearing about other suggestions of smaller towns for a future visit.

Avigliana. It's 20 minutes west of Torino Porta Nuova by commuter train. Beautiful town with two small lakes in a nature preserve and a 1000-year old pilgrimage cathedral and monastery that is the regional symbol of Piedmont, Sacra di San Michele. We had an unforgettable visit there, staying in a magnificent renovated convent, Certosa 1515, and exploring the Sacra with only two other visitors.
