Travel to Orvieto

When we are in Rome is it worth it to take the train for a day trip to Orvieto.
How long of a train ride is it.thanks

It's less than an hour, from Termini I seem to recall. The train lets you off at a funicular which takes you up the hill, and you can then catch a bus to the old center if you don't want to walk. It's a delightful town and a nice change from Rome.

Lorraine, Yes, a day trip to Orvieto is absolutely worthwhile, although spending a night or two there would be good too. The trip by rail varies from 1H:03M to 1H:32M, depending on which train you use. You can see all the details on the Trenitalia website. Some of the trains may be Regionale, so DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel. Unvalidated tickets often result in hefty fines, which are collected on the spot! As the previous reply mentioned, you'll take a Funicular from the station up to the town. I find it quite easy to walk to the Duomo and other sights, as the town is not large. Be sure to visit the Duomo and have a look at the incredible Frescoes on the ceiling in the small Chapel at the far end. You could also tour St. Patrick's Well (close to the Funicular) which was an incredible engineering feat when it was built. Happy travels!

As mentioned in the prior two responses, Orvieto is indeed worth it. Again the excellent RoninRome comes to the rescue with all the details on how to do this, along with extremely helpful photos of the whole process. How to do Orvieto Here are some photos I took of our two nights in Orvieto in 2011, in case you're interested: Beautiful Orvieto

And don't forget Civita, if at all possible. It's southwest of Orvieto, and can be reached by rental car or local bus. It's an incredible little hilltop city.
We also loved Orvieto and found it a very nice getaway from Rome.

Lorraine, Visiting Civita di Bagnoregio will be "challenging" to do as a day trip from Rome using only public transportation. The transportation there and back from Orvieto will use too much travel time, which will leave little time to see Orvieto. There's more than enough to see in Orvieto, so I'd suggest focusing on that. Cheers!

I second Ken's advice to focus on Orvieto. If you tried to see all the amazing places in Italy while you're there, you'll go nuts. Happy travels.

Your funivia ticket is also good on the little bus that takes you to the Duomo.
