Travel to Modena/Maranello (Ferrari/Lamborghini) from Bologna

We are traveling to Italy in December with an 18-yr old car enthusiast. We are working out our itinerary and high on our son’s list is touring the Ferrari, Lamborghini and possibly Ducati factories/ museums.
It seems Bologna is the best place to stay. Has anyone toured these museums recently and have opinions you’d like to share? What is the best way to travel- train and bus, Uber, taxi, car rental? Did you have a great place you stayed in Bologna or other suggestions near Motor Valley?

The Ferrari museums are very easy to get to by transit. The Enzo Ferrari Museum is very close to the train station in Modena, and there's a shuttle bus between there and the museum in Maranello. Ferrari offers a "factory" tour but you just take a bus through the factory complex without entering any of the buildings or seeing any of the assembly lines. I went to both last month, but I didn't go to any of the other museums.

Maserati's factory is just down the road from Ferrari in Modena.

The Lamborghini and Pagani museums will probably require a car, either a rental or an NCC for the day.

The Ducati museum is about a 20 minute walk from Borgo Panigale station in Bologna or there's a bus from near the city center to near the museum.

The New York Times just had an article on the Motor Valley as a whole, if you want to use that to help plan.

I stayed at the Hotel Roma in Bologna, just off Piazza Maggiore. It was nothing spectacular but the location was great for exploring Bologna. If you're going to be doing more day trips, I would recommend somewhere closer to the station.

28 minute train ride from Bologna Centrale (west platforms) to Modena.
Ferrari museum is a 3 minute walk.
We loved it.

In 2019, there was a bus from Bologna to the Ferrari factory/museum. Our travel partner took that bus to the factory, then the shuttle from the factory to the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena (where the whole group reunited) and the train back to Bologna. If the bus still exists, that itinerary worked really well.
