I know August is when Italians generally take holiday for the entire month. Has anyone traveled to Italy during the month of August, and if so, are there still plenty of things to do/see?
Thanks!
We are always there the end of July and August. Some restaurants will be closed - but for the most part everything is open. Just beware of the costal resort areas - they are FILLED with people on Holiday. The Italians and the French really take over the beaches.
Of course plenty to see and do, but include long queues and plenty of tourists in the equation.
It will be very hot and some of the stores, bars, and restaurants will be closed. The museums however will be open. If you are planning to go to any towns on the coast book ahead!
thanks for all the replies. we are really looking forward to our trip:)
If you like opera, or can manage 'just the experience' of it, I suggest Verona for a few days. The opera season finishes on August 31st. Tickets are easily available online. Just google for the link. There is also a local bus to Lake Garda nearby for a relaxing day on a ferry.
April, I agee with Claire - it WILL BE HOT. Temperatures may break 100 degrees. So prepare accordingly!
- Dress lightly in breathable fabrics. (but know if you enter a major church, shoulders and knees must be covered)
- In Rome, if you carry a small water bottle you can fill up at many of the fountains and outdoor water "spouts." The water's great!
- Make sure your hotel has AC (we do not and August is our least pleasant month - I personally know why everyone goes to the beach!).
- Many smaller shops will be closed for 2-3 weeks in August. Just depends on where you're at...
- Eat lots of Gelato. In Rome, try Gioliit's,Della Palma, and Fiocco di Neve, All are near the Pantheon.
On the upside, You typically do not have to worry about getting rained on in August (Don't I wish!).
Before moving to Rome I lived in Dacula, GA so you folks from Locust Grove will have no trouble with the heat! Go BRAVES!
