I am trying to find a way to travel from Venice to Fonzaso where my husband's grandparents were born. We would like to travel there for a daytrip and there will be 6 of us. A car rental will be very expensive and we would prefer to take a train or bus but I have not been successful in finding any public transportation going there. Another possibility would be to hire a driver but I think that would be very expensive. Anyone been there and have any experience with this? Thanks for your advice.
Wow, My dad's parents were also from Fonzaso. Came over to the US in the early 1900's.
There is a bus that runs from Feltre to Fonzaso. However, we have never used it so I don't know the name or schedule. We have always had a car.
If you are going to go, let me strongly suggest that you stay a couple of nights. It is an interesting area on its own and don't discount the appeal of being in your ancestral home. A two or three day car rental shouldn't be too much and might be only slightly more expensive than the train bus combo.
Here is the hotel in town, the Hotel Antico Albergo Sant'antonio. Family owned and the food is all home cooked and wonderful.
Ditto for Ron. I lived in the Veneto on the way from Venice to Feltre. It is easy to pick up a rental in Venice, well the airport actually. It isn't that long a drive and the cost of a van split between 6 people shouldn't be onerous. There aren't many options for rental cars farther inland except maybe Treviso. But Treviso is so close to Venice the economics are a nullity. On the way to Fanzaso you might consider taking a routing that will take you through Valdobbiadene, in the heart of the Prosecco wine region. Valdobbiadene is only a few minutes off SR348, which is the highway you will take to Feltre, then SR50 to Fanzaso. Enjoy.
My niece is there at the moment and she caught a
