travel to Castelrotto

We are taking the train from Venice through Verona and then up to Bolzano. We wish to stay at least 1-2 nights in Castelrotto. What is the transportation from Bolzano to Castelrotto? Suggestions of places to stay? If we want to hike in the meadows, is staying in Bozano just as easy?

lisa, I'll be travelling that route later this year (travelling down from Munich). From Bolzano to Castelrotto, you'll travel by Bus. The station is one block west of the train station, the trip is about 50-minutes and cost €3.50 one-way or €5 return. The station in Castelrotto is just below the main square. For places to stay, you might have a look at Hotel Cavallino d'Oro or Hotel Wolf. IMO, Castelrotto would be a better location to stay, especially as you want "hike in the meadows". It's relatively easy to get from there to Alpi di Suisi which has lots of great hiking locations. Staying in Bolzano would add transportation times, so wouldn't be as convenient. Once you arrive there, you may find that you planned more than two nights! Happy travels!

Dear Ken (Canada), Mahalo for the amazing prompt reply. We are so excited about this first trip to Italy and are trying not to have our 2-week trip so time-planned. Fortunately, we will only be in the northern part of the country (Venice/ Dolomites/Cinque Terre/ Tuscany and Florence) so can be a little flexible with our time. Thank you for the hotel suggestions. We had planned to just find a place to stay when we arrived, but perhaps because of the time we might arrive there, we should try to make some reservations. Have a safe journey with your travels. lisa, komo mai (I think that's the correct phrase for "You're welcome") or is he mea 'ole more appropriate? One more note regarding the Buses to Castelrotto. There are two departures per hour Monday-Friday and one departure per hour on weekends. Departures are usually at 10 past the hour and also 40 past the hour on week days. What time of the year will you be there? As this is your first trip to Italy, I'd suggest having a look at the Italy 2012 Guidebook, as there's an enormous amount of information there that will help your trip to go smoothly (Note: I'm not trying to sell Guidebooks, but simply relating what I find useful for my travels - I've been using the 2012 edition to plan my trip). Where are you staying in the Cinque Terre? One of my favourite areas, and I'll also be back there this year. As you haven't travelled in Italy before, be sure to do some research on "Rail Skills", as there can be some potentially expensive pitfalls to be aware of. Cheers!

Will do Ken. Traveling between June 6-21, starting in Venice and ending in Florence. Hoping to stay somewhere in Vernazza (to support them), but will probably wait until we arrive to find a place. Castelrotto hotels are expensive and booking up fast. Fortunately, we are not 4-star hotel ladies and not unnerved about sharing the bath.
btw, e komo mai means Welcome/come in. A better translation of 'you're welcome' is 'A 'ole pilikia ("ah'oh-leh pee-lee-kee-yah").

I can second Cavallino D'Oro. Stayed there last Sept. Nice place and friendly staff.

Here's another vote for staying in Castelrotto and at Cavallino D'oro, excellent service, clean, charming, good breakfast. There's a bus stop in town from which it's just a short walk to the hotel. I seem to remember that there are also lifts that take you up to places where you can hike.

Lisa, I was in that area in June of last year. It may be more difficult since you are on public transportation, but we stayed at the Hotel Santner and found it to be fantastic. It is located in the alpe di siusi and would be the best jumping off point for a hike.

Thanks to all who responded. I was able to get a reservation at Hotel Wolf for 40 euros per person. They also have a new shuttle that takes you up to the alps de siusi. I thought the price was fair and they responded quickly and warmly. Got a nice feeling from them.
Will keep you posted

You people are amazing! How do you even find posts like mine to respond to? Can I take you all on my trip with me? Any suggestions for Cinque Terre would also be welcome. We want to stay in Vernazza to help support the community, but will it be the best place for us. My girlfriend and I love to hike and want to see as much as we can in the area in the 2-1/2 days we are there.

lisa, Regarding the Cinque Terre, it would be a good idea to check the Vernazza Travel Advisor page, for a list of the businesses that have re-opened. I'm sure this will change as the season progresses, so be sure to check it from time-to-time. As you like hiking, the trail from Vernazza to Monterosso has re-opened and the Via dell'Amore is also open. The Vernazza-Monterosso trail is the most challenging, so you'll get a good workout! You may find when you arrive in the Cinque Terre that you wish you had allotted more time.
