We are travelling by train from Rome to the Sorrento area and then back to Rome to return home. We plan to stay in Sorrento for a few days. Is there a practical way to visit Paestum on route by train? Is one night at Paestum adequate? Any recommendations for places to stay near the ruins? Thank you

You can take the train or take the direct bus from Salerno to Paestum. (soory, I don't know of a hotel) It is certainly do-able as a day-trip though - you wouldn't need to stay there....I'd say a few hours at the ruins and little museum is perfect.
