Travel to and from Volterra

I checked the trenitalia website about a train to Volterra from the Cinque Terre and saw a bus symbol. I have not been able to find any information as to the scheduling of the buses to and from Volterra. The town is one I really don't want to miss but I need to have practical travel arrangements to make it possible. Does anyone have insight on this?

Volterra, like San Gimignano, a nearby neighbor, does not appear to have a train station. You must reach them by bus or car. For the runs you see, Trenitalia takes you by train down to Cecina on the west coast of Italy where you transfer to a bus that will take you to Volterra. However, it looks like the bus runs into Volterra are very limited. Looks like twice a day.

An alternative is to take the train into Florence, walk about 500 feet to the SITA bus terminal and take the bus to Volterra. The bus runs are more frequent. CLICK HERE to see the bus schedule.

Or, rent a car in La Spezia, if one should be available, and drive to Volterra. With a car, you can jump over to San Gimignano as well.

Stacy - I did Cinque Terra to Volterra by train and bus last year, and would recommend the following route. Take train from Cinque Terre to Pontedera (via Pisa Centrale). Take bus #500 from Pontedera to Volterra (avoid 13:19 bus on school days). Not sure where you're headed after Volterra, but I took bus #770 to Colle Val d'Elsa where I then had to switch to a SITA bus to Siena (believe you would also change there for SITA bus to Florence). Bus schedules can be found at www.cpt.pisa.it. Click on Percorsi e orari icon, then Servizio extraurbano icon and then scroll down to the bus numbers. Schedules show times in both directions. FR times are workdays (Mon-Sat) and FS is holidays. Few if any buses run to or from Volterra on Sundays. Send me a private message if you would like more details.
