I will be travelling to Cinque Terre from Venice at the end of my trip, but I need advice on how to get from Monterosso to Bologna since I fly out of Bologna. I assume I will have to travel there a day ahead of my flight out, but can't seem to find train info.
Prudence, it's really easy. You will need to take a train from La Spezia to Bologna. There are several runs during the day but only the 7:52am run (train 2292) is a direct with no train changes. You can go later but you'll need to change trains at least once. You'll also need to take the train from Monterosso to La Spezia to pick up any of these runs. This is not difficult.
HERE'S THE LINK to the current train schedule (which could change).
There is a regional train that leaves Monterosso at 07:35 and goes directly to Bologna (no changes), arriving at 10:49. See the timetables at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.
Thanks for your advice. I was afraid I'd spend the entire day travelling, but it sounds much better now. Happy trails.
Are you planning to spend a night in Bologna? If you are not, be sure to leave plenty of time between when your train arrives in Bologna and getting to the airport for your flight.
In September we took the early train from Monterrosa for Bologna and were suppose to change for our train to Venice. The train engine broke down in a station (luckily it was in the station I was told by some people on our train and not a tunnel). We had to take a bunch of local trains to get to Venice to reach our destination and arrived about 4 hours later then planned. Also our first train from Rome to CT was delayed about an hour. From our experiences, I would not rely on Italian trains to always be on time.
