Travel to Amalfi Coast

I am planning to travel to the Amalfi Coast Sept. 2015. Is the weather still warm? Will I be able to swim? I am 60 and will travel solo. Since this will most likely be my only trip here I would like it to be memorable. Best hotel in Amalfi? How many nights? Should I stay in Sorrento? If so, best hotel in Sorrento. I like to be pampered rather than travel on a shoestring. There are conflicting posts on both Sorrento and Amalfi. I plan to also visit Capri. Stay over? Day Trip? Best Hotel? All help very greatly appreciated!

Best to one may not mean best to someone else.

I suggest you read one of Rick Steve's guides to Italy to see if your questions are answered. There are also many other websites like TripAdvisor.com that can guide you toward your travel needs.

If you really want to do the trip right, I would suggest you get your hotel to hook you up with a car and driver. They'd be able to maximize your travel experience along the coast south of Naples.

That sounds like a fab trip, Debra.

Last year you were planning a trip for this summer to stay in Positano. Did that trip happen? I see you asking about Sorrento and Amalfi this time. Is Positano off, or is this the second trip to the Amalfi so you've seen enough Positano?

And regarding "best" can you be more specific as to what "best" means to you when choosing a hotel, please. View? Setting? Dinner? Breakfast? Room? Bathroom? Pool? Convenience? Price?

Please help us help you...

Oh, by the way ... you say

There are conflicting posts on both Sorrento and Amalfi.

What conflict do you see, please?

Sorrento is more convenient for transportation to Pompeii and Naples, but If you prefer to stay in the Amalfi coast, then stay there and not in Sorrento. The bus ride is about one hour from Sorrento to Amalfi. I find the Amalfi coast to be quainter (also better beaches). But many on this board prefer Sorrento for the convenience of the Circumvesuviana train and also because it's flatter (Positano is on a steep cliff). You can reach Capri by boat from either Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast. I have visited Capri only as a day trip from Positano. No hotels to suggest. I travel on a shoestring.
