travel to Abruzzo from Rome by public transportation

Hi,
My husband and I are planning to spend a couple of days in the Abruzzo region in late September 2023. We would be coming from Rome and would like to take public transportation since we don't want to drive. From Abruzzo, we'd be heading up to the Tuscany and Sienna areas. Any suggestions for how to get to Abruzzo and beyond? (bus or train?) and where to stay? Since our budget is tight, it needs to be affordable. I've looked into having a tour guide take us around, but it's way too expensive for us. What towns do the buses or trains stop in on the way to Pescara? We aren't interested in staying in Pescara, but it looks like that is where the trains or buses go to?
Thanks,
Nancy

From Rome to Pescara, the train goes through Abruzzo, stopping in Sulmona and other towns on the way. You can see them on Trenitalia:

For more options, you could change in Sulmona to the local train which stops in many small towns before reaching Pescara and then heading up the coast to San Benedetto del Toronto.
