We our planning an extensive tour of Italy and would like to visit the home towns of our families which are in southern Italy. Ascoli Piceno and Catanzaro most specifically. Any help with accomodations and train comnnections, general advice etc. would be greatly appreciated. Bill

My folks come from Nicastro and Sambiase near Catanzaro. We spend a week there every year and we always stay at the Hotel Savant in Nicastro. We are always pleased with the accommodation. The staff is very friendly and they always remember me. If you plan on traveling around Calabria your should really have a car. They are available at the airport and maybe the train station at Lamezia Terme. You will need an International Driver's Permit, which you can obtain at AAA for 415 or $18. This document is not necessary for the car rental, but you need it in case you are stopped. One more thing, traffic laws this far south are only suggestions. P.S. It looks like we are neighbors.
