Travel time around Lake Como

We will be visiting the Italian Lake district for 6 days in early June. From what we have read and been told by friends, we like both Lake Como and Lake Orta.

If we base ourselves at Varenna on Lake Como how far could we go by public transport (bus, boat) for day trips. Could we easily go to Orta San Giulio and back on a day trip from Varenna? Or should we base ourselves somewhere more central, like Varese?

Varenna is a good base for visiting the lake Como. Lake Como is shaped like a Y upside down. The best part is where the three branches of the Y meet at the mid lake.. Varenna is there, just across from Bellagio and. Menaggio. All are connected by ferry, which is the best way to travel the lake.

Lago d'Orta is too far for a day trip from Varenna. If you want to go there you need to split your time and spend at least a couple of nights at Lago d'Orta. Orta San Giulio is nice. From Varenna you need to take two trains. First to. Milan, then from Milan to Verbania and a bus to Omegna.
