Travel Suggestion?

So excited! Flying into Rome this late spring for a littleover a week.

We are trying to decide between 2 travel options.
1. Train from Rome to Agropoli and use it as a home base. Then take 1 or 2 day trips from Agroli into the Amalfi and Naples area.
2. Train from Rome to Naples and stay overnight before traveling to Agropoli base.
Both option will involve a stay in Rome at the end of the trip.

Suggestions?

Looks like you will need to change trains at least onc in Salerno. You could spend a night therr depending on how late your flight and the train arrives. Have you been to the Agropoli
area before? The Cilento peninsula is wonderful.

Thank you for the idea.

We have not been to Agropoli before. I was looking for a quieter home base. Would you suggest staying there?

Is it realistic to stay in Agropoli for the week but take a day trip to Amalfi area? You mentioned changing trains in Salerno.

I've been to Positano 20 years ago, but my family has not. (8yo daughter) We traveled to northern Italy 4 years ago and loved it. I am trying to figure out if we will get to Naples and Amalfi area and love it and wish we had stayed there longer or stay in Agropoli longer. What are your thoughts?

It looks like there are direct trains from Rome to Agropoli.

It looks like there are direct trains from Rome to Agropoli.

I see an IC train that takes 3.5 hours or fast train to Naples then regional to Agropoli that takes just 2.5 hours

I am trying to figure out if we will get to Naples and Amalfi area

Regional train to Naples
Regional train to Salerno then ferry or bus to AC towns
I see just one fast train Agropoli to Salerno at 10:07

Your Subject line is very vague- could you edit to add more info (Agropoli/Naples travel or something like that)

Are you choosing between these options for a specific reason, like you need a rest or you are going to see something in Naples?
If you are only taking 1-2 long day trips, I think it works—I would not want to do the day trips every day. I have been to the area but did not visit Agropoli.
Check train schedules on Trenitalia and ferries from Salerno on Travelmar.

Why Agropoli rather than Salerno?

I ask that even though we stayed in Pisciotta x 2 nights, then Naples x 4 nights, even though we chose the Cilento coast over the Amalfi, and even though we felt great about those choices. But we had a car to explore the Cilento coast — Castellabate, Pisciotta and Palinuro. Loved Paestum and Tenuta Vannulo, both just a little north of Agropoli.

Agropoli seems a bit far for day trips to AC and Naples.

Definitely recommend having a car to visit the Cilento area. It is perfect for a quieter relaxing trip, but not a great location for side trips, especially to the Amalfi coast. Many people visit the Amalfi coast by bus or ferry from Salerno. I personally would not make Salerno a base as it is a busy crowded city
From Agropoli you can certainly visit Paestum and Castellabate. With a car (and possibly bus) you can visit Acciaroli. Many of the coastal areas are more pleasant than the Amalfi coast because they are not overrun with crowds.
