There are two people traveling and we want to go from Sorrento to Materna for a day trip. We will be staying in Sorrento and doing day trips from there.
What is the best and least inexpensive way to make this trip, allowing the most time in Materna? We want to return to Sorento on the same day, but do not care if it is in the evening.
Is the bus, train, or rent a car the best? How are the roads if we decide to drive ourselves? Are they full of traffic?

Do you mean Matera? Try rome2rio.com for a look at the various options. You'll see that it's a 3 1/2 hour drive to travel the 156 miles. I can't figure out what other place you might be talking about, but there's no Materna in Italy.
Travel by public transportation from Sorrento to Matera is not a nightmare but a pretty bad dream. If possible, plan to spend a night there - the Sassi are lit up at night, it's beautiful. If you rent a car you'll waste less time backtracking to Sorrento.
