Travel route from Florence to CinqueTerre and back to Milan or Florence?

Hi, we will be traveling from Venice ( after Milan) and want to see Florence and Cinque terre ; we have 5 days once we leave Venice . Would it be prudent to head directly to Florence, spend a couple days , then CinqueTerre, a couple days, then back to Florence and fly back to the states from there. Or head to Milan from CinqueTerre and head home from Milan. Either way we need to get a room and allow train time.
thoughts ?

Check flight connections home from both Milan and Florence and see what works best. I suspect Milan will work better as you can get a direct flight from there to a few US cities but perhaps not from Florence. Just check it out on Google Flights.

Check flight prices and decide that way. Often, open jaw tickets (enter one city, depart another) are more expensive, but not necessarily. I think a loop, arriving and departing Milan works nicely, but again, check prices and times and see what works best...

thanks, yes Milan has a direct back to Toronto and Florence does not. I was looking at trains from Cinque terre to Milan which is longer with a connection than going to Florence. I guess that way we would have to go back to Florence as well from Cinque Terre, so time on the train is about the same.

thanks !

You could pick a larger Cinque Terre village like Monterosso or even Levanto (one village north - and not a bad place to stay anyway) where the IC trains may stop, so you have one fewer connection. You should be able to find a direct train to Milan from one of those - I know I got one from Levanto to Milano Centrale a few years back (then caught the airport train to MXP).
