Travel questions

I need some info on transportation. What is the best way to get from Naples Airport to Sorrento and how to get from Sorrento to Rome. We will be staying in Sorrento and then moving onto Rome. What is the best way to travel?

I like using rome2rio website for first level logistical planning. As the website doesn't always cover seasonal and dynamic pricing, I then check with the transport companies in question to confirm time, date and pricing. At least seeing it quickly on the r2r map and the list of options on the left let me see what might work and what I want to immediately discount.
I haven't visited in a few years, but Sorrento to Rome is train with a transfer in Naples.

There's a direct bus from the Naples airport to Sorrento. Search for the many past posting about the bus.

It takes around 3 hours to get from Sorrento to Rome by a combination of local train (Circumvesuviana or Campania Express) and high-speed Freccia or Italo train. Or you could use a private transfer to Naples train station, but for 2 people it's about 10 times the cost of the local train.

That bus Frank mentions from airport to Sorrento is the Curreri bus. This is your most convenient option by far.

Frank has provided the most economical options from Sorrento to Rome but here are some helpful links:

Cirvumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples:

Campania Express train from Sorrento to Naples:

(This may not be current for 2019 yet as it only runs seasonally)

Trenitialia; fast trains from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini, which is the station you're most likely to be traveling to:

Italo; a private rail company with fast trains serving the Naples and Rome:

As he said, some folks use private drivers for the journey between Sorrento and Naples. That is the most expensive option but can have its benefits if traveling with a group, late at night, with mobility challenges, etc.

Ok so I am so confused. Just looked up the Trentalia train schedule and some trains take 3 hrs and others only 1 hr. What is the difference? and why wouldn't I do the one that arrives in 1 hr?

If the train is an RV or RE it's a regional train and makes many more stops, goes slower and takes longer. If you buy the high speed trains ahead of time, prices are good and you save lots of time.

jr,

To summarize the options that should work best for the routes you mentioned.....

  • Naples airport to Sorrento: use the Curreri Viaggi coach - about one hour and €10 PP. An earlier reply posted a link to their website.
  • Sorrento to Rome: travel from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale via Campania Express or Circumvesuviana train (preferably the Express). As I recall, both trains arrive in the Garibaldi station which is downstairs from Napoli Centrale. Walk upstairs to the main station, buy a ticket for either Freccia or Italo high speed trains, and those will get you to Rome in about 1H:10M. You can buy an advance ticket for the high speed train and save a few bucks, but you MUST be willing to commit to a specific departure as the tickets are only good for one train, date and departure time.
