Anyone know if you can tour Sicily by public transportation - bus and/or train - rather than renting a car?
Thanks.
I have driven around Sicily and while it was grand to be able to go to smaller towns & villages, driving in Palermo and Siracusa was an experience I will not soon forget. Flocks of young guys on motorbikes, full of bravado & testosterone, are merciless if you show the slightest hesitation at an intersection or as they come at you on the wrong side of the street. The car drivers were not as bad but seemed to dislike & disregard traffic lights, all the while trying to edge you out of your lane so they could enter it. That being said, I would do it again without a moment's thought.
Boni: We had a car when we were in Sicily a couple of years ago but we could see there were lots of buses. At Catania airport there were dozens of them, their destinations well posted, ready to whisk you hither & thither. A quick google will get you lots of information on bus routes in Sicily.
Travel in Sicily is rarely done by plane, as the island is well serviced by its bus and train system. However, there are domestic flights from Palermo to the island of Pantelleria and the Pelagie islands, which are part of Sicily. The trains offer an affordable and convenient way to get around the main towns of Sicily. If you are travelling to a smaller village then the bus will most likely be able to take you there. For many visitors, the best option is to rent a car. Many of the island’s nicest spots are far from any train or bus stop and the convenience of hiring a car is unbeatable.
If you go to this website it will help you decide on your transportation.( I got my info from the website also)

DS:)
Boni, except for one day, I traipsed around Sicily for 3 1/2 weeks using ferries, buses and trains, in 2006. Never a problem, even with my largish bag. And I will be traipsing again in a few months.
We prefer buses whenever possible. Trains are slow.
