Due to heavy rain and floodings, railway lines between Bologna-Rimini-Ancona and Ferrara-Ravenna-Rimini, plus some local lines, are today closed. Long distance trains between north Italy and Puglia are routed through Florence and need something like 4 hours more travel time. In general, avoid travelling to affected areas; no local substitutions possible.
Oh my! Thanks for the update and advice!
I feel guilty for not paying more attention to the ER flooding. The poor people and farmers. Any way we can help?
Italy floods: F1 Imola race cancelled as deadly deluge sparks evacuations in Emilia-Romagna https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-65620597
This from the BBC site today.
It’s a terrible situation for the area.
This is so sad! We are scheduled to visit E-R in Sept/Oct, including Bologna, Ferrara, and Ravenna. I wonder what we'll find. I agree with the previous comment, wondering how we might help other than bringing our tourism euros there after they get back on their feet.
Oh dear! Not good news for Ithe whole area! They needed rain…but not flooding! Those are railway lines we travel on from Rome on to Salzburg in July. I hope rain and flooding subsides and things get better again soon for them all!
In some areas it has not been possible to gauge the rainfall, because the amount exceeded what their instruments could record.

First time I have heard of that situation.
Hopefully the rail lines are still in place when the water recedes.
Flooding situation still very serious. Train travel will resume not earlier than Monday 22nd between Bologna and Rimini, no expected date for resuming services around Ravenna.
How awful for all the people in these regions! We are flying into venice 5/28 and have tickets we booked on trenitalia from Venice to Ravenna on 5/29 where we are to embark on Royal Caribbean cruise. It sounds like our train travel may not be possible. What would you recommend as our best option for travel at this point?
At present there are no travel options at all in the Ravenna zone. Railways and roads are flooded. Still, 5/29 is distant and the situation can get better.
Why train service will not resume very soon
You can see the trenitalia trains moving in real time on viaggiatreno.it, from which I take the following notices: trains are still suspended between Faenza and Forlì (part of the Bologna-Rimini itinerary; I understand that also roads are closed in that area); trains are suspended as well over all the lines leading to Ravenna, namely Faenza-Ravenna, Castelbolognese-Ravenna (this is the itinerary coming from Bologna), Ferrara-Ravenna. I can’t see trains between Ravenna and Rimini, either. Also the local line Firenze-Faenza is closed between Marradi and Faenza.
Further update: some trains now traveling between Ravenna and Rimini, under slow orders.
Faenza to Forlì closed; they are working to reopen this important section - actually blocking the whole Adriatic long distance line, before June 2nd. There are buses between Faenza and Forlì, but traffic is very slow and immediate transfer between trains and buses not always possible.
Faenza-Ravenna and Ferrara-Ravenna still flooded.
Lugo-Russi and Lugo-Castelbolognese (this is part of the Bologna-Ravenna link) seriously damaged and will take time to open again.
Long distance trains to Puglia working on alternative (much longer) itineraries.
Thank you so very much for posting these updates! We have young adult backpackers in Italy now trying to sort this out…forwarding your info.
