We are planning to leave Lake Como on Easter Sunday April 5th 2026 and I am wondering if anyone knows to expect travel closures or delays because of the holiday? Do places close in Lake Como due to the holiday? Is it better to stay put Sunday and travel Monday instead. Also, we're not sure yet where to go in Switzerland for 4 days after Lake Como. We'd like to experience small towns/ explore/hike and end in a big Swiss city to fly home to USA.
It will be crowded but trains and ferries will be running- perhaps on a holiday schedule.
If you were staying for dinner on Easter you wouldd want to make a reservation
We were in a smaller town in Sicily for Easter one year and were surprised to find that Easter Monday was also a holiday, with no public transportation running. We had to stay an extra night. I don’t really know how you can predict the situation.
I would shoot for Zurich as your city to fly home from.
Just curious where you are staying in Lake Como since you may have done some good research? We are trying to go to that area at the end of April 2026. Planning now. Will be in Umbria & Tuscany (early and mid-April) before going north to lake Come at end of the month. We need at least a 2 bedroom apartment. Thanks
This is really late to secure lodging for spring 2026, if you're considering extending a stay, so don't delay. Expect the area to be very crowded and the regional trains serving the area to be jam-packed, SRO, and the schedules chaotic. Likewise, expect the lines to buy ferry tickets, and the lines for the ferries themselves, to be hour plus. We were in Lake Como around the May 1 holiday week, 2025, and were very disappointed with the size of the crowds. We found the best way to travel around the Middle Lake Area was before noon: buy ferry tickets around 7:30 am, be on a ferry by 9:30 am, and return to your lodging area by early afternoon. I'm sorry to report this, as this previously was one of our favorite places to visit, but the influencers have ruined it.
If you're in Varenna, you can take the regional trains to Tirano, and ride the Bernina Express to Pontressina/Chur, then onto Lucerne, perhaps . It's a little early in the season for the Alps. It's easy to fly out of Zurich from a base in Lucerne.
Enjoy!
Good advices above.
Where will you stay at Lake Como? And why do you want to go to Switzerland? The mountains are the same, but the prices are almost twice as high as in Italy.
