Travel Insurence ?

This will be our third trip Europe this September and I was wondering about travel Insurence. We did not buy it for our other trips but are thinking of getting some for this trip. What companies would you suggest ? We are not taking a tour just traveling on our own. Thanks Ron

We've used Travel Guard in the past and have only had to file one claim. That claim was processed efficiently and we'll not hesitate to use them again. Another thing to consider is medical evacuation insurance. Most travel policies have medical evacuation coverage. But they USUALLY will only evacuate you to the nearest hospital than can treat you. There is a company named "Med Jet Assist" that has a number of different membership plans. It in NOT medical insurance -- just med evacuation coverage. As long as you are more than 150 miles from home, they will, if medically necessary, fly you back to your home hospital in a medical jet with medical personnel. Google them and see what you think

I have always gone to insuremytrip.com. You can compare different plans and get the one that fits your needs.

I use Travel Guard, and only take the Medical and Evacuation insurance. Of course it is all based on your own risk tolerance and need for "Peace of Mind".

What type of insurance are you wanting? Cancellation? Trip delay? Lost bags? or just medical?

If you are mainly looking for medical/med evac check out an annual policy.

We use CSA travel insurance. I buy travel insurance mostly for the car rental insurance. It is much cheaper than what the rental car companies charge, and I am not quite comfortable using my credit card insurance. (The only credit card company I have heard good things about is American Express. I have read lots of complaints about Visa and Mastercharge mostly about them finding a way around paying out claims. Maybe someone here will have a positive story). The only time we had a claim was due to a fender bender in Italy. The police refused to give us a police report (not enough damage) but the claim came to almost 3,000 dollars. CSA paid us within 10 days of filing. Part of the reason everything went smoothly is that we had printed our police and immediately pulled it out and followed the directions. They included contacting CSA ASAP which we did. If something goes wrong and you know you want to file a claim, call them immediately for further instructions. Travelguard is very reputable as well. However, they cannot sell rental car insurance in my state, so CSA is what I use.

Thanks for the replays. I'm looking for medical & evacuation coverage. I will look at the ones suggested. I already have rental car coverage. Thanks Ron

The annual policies are great - you are covered for any trip - based on the distance from your home - as little as 100 miles away for coverage to begin. Far less expensive than the single trip policies that reimburse costs of your trip. Just be sure to get at least 50K for med evac - higher is always better. And make sure the med evac will transport you to a med facility near your home - NOT the closest suitable facility.

We used AAA and purchased their Allianz insurance with added medical emergency provisions. Like you, we've never used insurance before despite years of traveling but we're older now and husband has some medical issues. I think the policy has excellent coverage.

We have never used travel insurance for several trips to Europe, but needed to buy for a trip to Belarus this year. We used TravelGuard and were pleased with their professionalism, speec and cost.

Ron, I have used Travel Guard a few times, protecting myself primarily for major medical needs, including evacuation. Fortunately I have never needed to make a claim. You should be aware that with Travel Guard, maybe with other companies too, in order to protect yourself for "pre-existing conditions", you need to buy your coverage within 15 days of when you make initial payment for your trip (such as a deposit).

I do have one question ? We bought our airline tickets back in March so does that mean we are not eligible for the Insurence since we are not within 15 days of our first travel purchase. Thanks Ron.

The 15 day pre-existing condition generally means this: If you (or a covered family member) had a medical condition that existed prior to scheduling the trip, and it reoccurred and prevented you from taking the trip, you would not be covered unless you took out the policy with in 15 days of putting down the first deposit. If a new medical situation arose that prevented you from taking the trip you would be covered. If there are ticket costs early on and tour / hotel deposits later, I just don't know how that would be treated. In a case like this (and as is the case with all insurance), go straight to the horse's mouth and ask the insurer to be sure what will or will not be covered. With Travel Guard it is actually possible to still speak to a knowledgeable human so you might want to ring them up.

I have never bought Trip Insurance before but decided it was worth it since we will be taking a big trip this year and bringing our young daughter.
I went with Roam Right, they like other options have different plan levels to choose from. I went with their Preferred plan.
I looked into different providers at the time and they seemed best for my situation at least, I booked well after I made the first trip expense, but that only is a concern if you need pre-existing conditions to be covered which I did not care about.
Hopefully we will not know if they are a good provider or not. Amount I paid was $180.00 for coverage of the 3 of us for the trip timeframe.
