Travel insurance that covers isolation if you test positive before returning?

Hi all,
Sorry for another COVID thread, but I wanted to talk about something that I think we all agree is essential nowadays which is travel insurance.

I think many of us fear testing positive that day before we have to return home and needing to extend our stay for another possible week or more and incurring those expenses.

In my research for my upcoming trip, what I noticed was while a lot of policies cover potential lodging expenses if you have to isolate under Trip Delay benefits, if you read the terms of the policy they usually state the benefits of the policy (including the Trip Delay benefits) are effective from your Scheduled Departure Date through your Scheduled Return Date. So it would seem to me if you test positive and have to extend your stay past your original return date, you may be at risk of not being covered.

Some policies offer extension of coverage, to extend past your original return date if you can't return for a covered reason (such as illness), but these usually have a maximum time too. Most common that I have seen are 5, 7, and 10 days past the original return date.

I was hoping you all might not mind sharing what policy you went with and how long it would cover you if you had to extend your stay past your original return date.

I currently bought a policy with Tin Leg (their Luxury plan) and it says it can extend to 7 days past my original return date. I'm wondering if I should look for a policy with a longer extension given that I may need to isolate longer (according to Italy rules it could be up to 21 days if you continue to test positive?).

I found a policy from Seven Corners which states it can extend 10 days. I'm wondering if anyone has found any policies that extend any longer? Or if you have had to use your benefits to extend your stay, how did that go?

Thanks!

I purchased the same policy as you, mostly because it covered a full week after my original departure date and because the total amount they would reimburse is a bit higher than other policies I looked at. I couldn't find anything that offered coverage beyond 7 days and I would be very surprised if you were able to find something that would cover you for 21 days. My trip isn't until the end of the month but I'm really hoping that the rumor is true that the testing requirement will be dropped soon.

Great, thanks for feedback. Yea, that was the other reason I went with the Tin Leg policy, it seemed to offer the highest trip delay benefit I could find at the time.

I just started looking again today after reading some of the posts on here about getting stuck and learning about Italy's official isolation guidelines.

I was able to find a Seven Corners policy which says it can extend 10 days.

I also found an AIG Travel Guard policy which says it only extends for 7 days, BUT if you still can't return home past the 7 days because of restrictions by a Common Carrier or a Physician, it will extend 30 days. The problem is the maximum benefits is only $1000 so in my estimation it would probably work at the same as buying a shorter policy since I don't think there is anyway one could stretch $1000 for individual lodging for 21 days.

I am also going towards the end of the month.

The USAA policy seems very good, [haven't filed a claim,] but they answered all my covid-coverage questions to my satisfaction. Can folks who aren't ex/military purchase it- not sure?

There were several extensive threads here on insurance a few months back, with some insightful input, so perhaps a Search will help you find them.

Safe travels!

I believe you must be military/ex-military/dependent (etc) to purchase USAA insurance.

Appreciate this issue being flagged, as I just purchased insurance yesterday.

I checked in with the agency providing ours & confirmed that the coverage does indeed extend in the event of a quarantine. Here's what the agent wrote on the chat:

The plan offers quarantine coverage under the travel delay benefit, This benefit will cover meals and accommodations either for the length of time you are required to quarantine or until the benefit is exhausted

I am glad that you brought this topic to the forum. I am traveling in less than 2 weeks. I called AIG to purchase my emergency medical evacuation and repatriation policy. I typically self insure my trips otherwise. They sold me a policy to cover lodging in case of illness. But when I read the policy, it stated what you mentioned regarding the end of coverage. It also excludes any extension unless the full price of the trip is also insured. So, I will also be self insuring an extended stay. I guess that is what emergency funds are for!

Edited to add: my triangle just turned blue on this post!

We bought Travelex - Travel Select - it has extended coverage for 7 days. for our upcoming May 24- June 14th trip. I went with 7 day extension based on the US requirements of 5 days. As I understand it the 5 days is because the CDC changed its quarantine rules to fives day and I believe that is my air carriers requirement as well.

The CDC guideline for post-quarantine travel is still 10 days, not 5. "You tested positive for COVID-19. Do not travel until a full 10 days after your symptoms started or the date your positive test was taken if you had no symptoms." From: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html#do-not-travel This is why most U.S. airlines won't let you fly within 10 days of testing positive. I've seen inconsistent evidence on other travel forums of people getting around the 10-day requirement by getting a letter of recovery from a medical professional.

I buy Generali Travel insurance and just bought their standard policy for a trip coming up, and it covers the “ I just tested positive for Covid and I fly out tomorrow!”
All three of their prepackaged policies have the Covid coverage for both you , your travel partner to get hotels and meals should you have to quarantine in a hotel.
