Travel Insurance specifics

Hi, I have always buy travel Insurance for all our travels outside the country. I bought it for my peace of mind . I read in a previous post that the Insurance only covers the non refundable part of the trip. I always thought that it covers everything such as a family emergency or a death or when you're laid off from work that will stop you or interrupt you from the trip. Am I wrong to assume that?

Sally, you can get travel insurance to specifically cover any part of your travel plans. We combine travel insurance with the coverage that our health insurance, and credit cards offers, to build our "portfolio". We always go to Squaremouth.com, pick the type of insurance/coverage that meets our needs, pick a few various plans/companies, and compare the specific details of each plan. When you lay them out side-by-side, and look at the those details, you get a good picture, that you can use to pick one for your needs.

I think the 'non-refundable part' that was referred to in the other post was talking about (for instance) non-refundable hotel deposits, etc. If your hotel charged you for the first night of 5 nights of a no-show , you would not be reimbursed for the other 4 nights that you never lost payment on... All companies and their policies are NOT the same! And as you read and compare the different companies' policies, BE SURE that YOUR policy includes those items!!! The policies I've read directed me to an online 'booklet', with the explicit instructions to carefully note which sections actually apply to MY policy. For instance, the booklet might have several sections concerning medical evacuation, but MY policy doesn't include med evac. You have to read very carefully; call and double-check any and all items you're not absolutely sure of. Never assume anything - even if you bought the 'exact' same policy last year. Things may change from year to year...
