friends and i will be traveling to italy next summer and have been strongly advised to purchase travel insurance. What insurance websites or companies have you had a positive experience? thanks for your time!

Would not think of spending the kind of dollars you got to spend to go to Europe without travel insurance. Always have had good experience with Travelgaurd. Never registered a claim however so don't really know how well they serve when they need to help!

I am using www.accessamerica.com I used them for my trip to Australia and now for Italy. I got sick half way in Australia and had to fork out $200 for meds and a dr and they refunded me plus the amt of the tour I had to skip that day. Definately worth it. I also believe they now cover acts of terrrorism ect in their policy....

Insuremytrip.com -- hope that is correct. Google can straighten it out. Is a web site for comparing various travel insurance options. ALL policies are NOT the same. Costs are in the range of 10 to 20% of the costs that you are covering. Check the fine print very carefully. Generally speaking, the more you pay the more problems are covered. During 15 years of traveling to Europe we have taken insurance only once and that was because we had eight people involved in the trip. We carry specialized medical insurance but that is an annual policy but no trip cancellation. At this stage we consider ourselves self insuring given the savings we have had from not taking insurance in the past. It is personal choice -- no pat answer.

always buy it, have never used the policy. It costs 5-10% of the trip. To me its money well spent for the peace of mind in case something disastrous happens. I buy insurance that has medical repatriation included. I think of it this way; I slip on a spilled gelato and break my leg, the airlines are going to charge a fortune to fly me back and the insurance will cover it. Also th travel delay and trip interruption is worth it to me; if a close relative were to become gravely ill or worse many policies pay for you to return home. Be sure to check what the policies you are considering cover; insuremytrip.com lets you see side-by-side.

We used Squaremouth.com. for comparison shopping for a policy. ( It used many of the same insurance Co. as InsureMyTrip) It had a terrfic layout that let us shop quite easily.
Don't over-buy...........many things may already be covered by your Health Insurance co (Which is also free in Italy), credit cards (cover baggage losses, etc)

I look at travel insurance a little like life insurance.I have life insurance but havnt used it as yet and hope not to for a long time.Travel insurance is inexpensive and priceless if you need it.If you dont it is even better.

I've heard TravelGuard is a good one. I got a policy through my AAA (auto-club) office. I make it a rule to buy the policy and then I will be assured not to need it! If I don't buy it - I surely jinx myself and will need it. Silly, I know, but it has worked for me so far. I'm not willing to spend this much money on a trip and trust it to chance/karma/etc.

I have always used Travelex and have never had a problem with this company. It's recommended by many of the high end tour companies we have traveled with.

With all the airline delays and cancellations if you have a prepaid trip and miss your flight through no fault of your own, it's nice to have the insurance to pay for the new tickets.
