Travel insurance

Going to Rome for 2 weeks in June and since USA insurance I have does not travel I am trying to find insurance company. Short of going onto Google I could use some advice on insurance companies so I can compare types of coverage and cost.

I use insuremytrip.com to compare policies.

I agree with Andrea. I like insuremytrip.com because you can compare policy features and coverage side by side (if you display them in column format) and eliminate until you get down to the one that works best. I've used it a few times now.

Have an idea of what coverage and features you want, and narrow it down.

I'm going to Italy in June, on a Rick Steve's Tour.
I bought my insurance from Travel Guard - I believe there is an arrangement between them and RS Tours.
I think I recall that the RS office gave me their toll-free number, which on Travel Guard's brochure is 866/400-9509.

Anyway, for $46, for 17 days, I got what I feel is sufficient insurance covering most every type of loss.
Most importantly to me, it includes $25,000 in out-of-pocket reimbursement for doctor/clinic/hospital charges in the event I need that kind of attention (careless tourist breaks a leg, that sort of stuff, or actually get sick).
Also insurance for loss/theft of baggage and personal items, plus insurance for a number of other types of losses.
And a whopping $500,000 coverage for shipping my remains back if I meet my demise over there.

I thought the $46 was so reasonable that I didn't bother to shop around, just bought it over the phone with my credit card.
I suppose you know that with this type of insurance, any event over there where someone expects payment for services, you will have to pay cash or credit card, then get with Travel Guard for reimbursement when you get home - I'm pretty sure that's the way it works.

Hope this helps --- happy travels --- Jim.

thanks for all the great insurance information. I didn't know so many from which to choose.

There are two types of insurance to consider - trip cancellation/interruption AND/OR medical insurance. Jim described the medical which is important. I don't worry about cancellation.
