Getting closer to trip to Italy. I've read Rick's take on travel insurance. The comprehensive coverage -- cancellation, interruption and medical emergencies -- is high. Medical/medical evacuation coverage is reasonable. I'm leaning towards the latter. Good call? I've heard horror stories where badly injured Americans have incurred bills around $100,000 or more for transportation back to the U.S.
...horror stories...$100,000 or more for transportation back to the U.S...
Read the fine print of any travel insurance. The devil is always in the details. Many poicies will only evac you to the nearest place that can treat you. Others may bring you back to the U.S. One company you might want to consider is MedJet Assist. It is strickly evac insurance if you are HOSPITALIZED more that 150 miles from home -- nothing else. And they have plans for different length trips. But do read the fine print.
Thanks, TC.
Most decent employer provided health care plans in the US provide emergency care abroad and my medigap policy for medicare does as well. so for many years we simply carried Medjet Assist until we aged out at 75 and now have another policy -- we have never tested these and hope they work but the most likely catastrophic financial disaster when traveling would be the need for air evacuation home. We knew of someone who had to mortgage their house to get their daughter home from Cairo after she was hit by a car.
Thanks, janettravels44.
