Travel in Italy in December

Is it reasonable to plan a trip to Naples and Puglia in December? My grandson is a student and only has December free to travel. He and I are planning to spend 2 nights in Naples then take a train south and rent a car. We are not experienced travelers , would welcome advice. I am worried about the weather being too cold.

Expect temperatures in the 50's fahrenheit in the day and 40's at night. It never gets below freezing. Italy seems to be busy no matter the time of year. The days are a lot shorter in winter and some do not like that. Sunrise is around 08:00 sunset around 16:00.
