I would like to stay in Tuscany and travel by car to Venice-perhaps driving up the Eastern coast in Oct. Is this doable in 1 or two weeks? Any recomendations?
Sure, based on the very limited information provided. A little quick for one week but two weeks would be better.
I can drive, and have driven, the fast way from Florence, in Tuscany, to Venice in about 3 hours, and have gone the slow way along the coast around Comacchio in a medium length day. If you added in Ravenna and the coast of Marche the drive could take maybe 2 or 3 days, so with 4 days in Tuscany, 4 days in Venice, and 3 days between - 11 days, 2 weeks sounds wonderful to me...
I trained from Bologna to Ancona because I wanted to see the coast. The tracks are very close the shoreline, between the beach and the roads, so the train mostly has unobstructed views of the beach. There is not much to see. Flat beaches, umbrellas, and little beach towns. Mile after boring mile. The A14 is not always on the coast and, even when it is, its coastal view is sometimes blocked by vegetation. You could take the local road, SS16, closer to the coast, but that will involve passing through many little towns, adding to your travel time. The other issue is your driving route from (somewhere in) Tuscany to the coast. If you want to begin the coast drive in Ancona, getting there will start with backtracking south and east to get to the main route across the Apennines to Ancona which is about 100 miles, not all of it freeway. Ancona-Venice is about 320 mile day, not all freeway, and not accounting for pit stops and lunch. You probably will spend the night somewhere between Ancona and Venice. Ravenna would be perfect. Here is an alternative: spend a night in Ravenna and skip the coast tour. Florence- Ravenna is about 100 miles, all freeway. Ravenna-Venice about 150 miles, all freeway. Ravenna (still on my list of things to do) has world famous 6th Cent. Byzantine mosaics and some good restaurants. You could be in Ravenna by lunch, see the sites and have a good dinner. You then could drive to Venice the next day and dump the car. The only gap in my plan is the issue of parking in Ravenna, which may or may not be a user friendly experience, I have no idea. FYI no matter where you drive in Italy, take care to avoid the ZTLs and don't forget that everyone in your party who drives your car must have an IDP.
Parking in Ravenna is'nt much of a hassle. Lots of little free lots around centro. As someone mentioned, A14 up the coast is not gonna give you a scenic drive. Glimpses of the ocean, a bit of beach and some colorful buildings but that's about it. You won't see any beach at all from SS16. Too far from the shore and once past Ravenna it starts taking you in a north westerly direction. There are other local roads that could take you along the shore but that'd be taking you though town traffic. There aren't any autostrada stretches from Tuscany shooting straight over to the east coast. Even the SS stretches are broken up. Again, you'd be going through some small towns on smaller local roads.
Alot of drive time and I'd say definitely have a GPS.
Thanks Frank. Just starting to put ideas together before getting to the planning stage. We would like to do a driving tour between Tuscany and Venice-leaving time in enjoy the vinyards and landscapes of Tuscany and then touring Venice. In looking at the map, I thought it would be wonderful to drive over to the Eastern coast and drive North to Venice.
