Travel in Italy

My daughter and I are traveling Italy June 14-29. Is there a two-week train pass? What is the best way to travel?

Personally, I would just go to the train station and buy a ticket to whichever city I was aiming for. Since you are going in June, you probably already know which cities you will visit and have your hotels booked.

If you think you need a pass, you could check out the Italian train site and also Seat61 for further info.

I just buy the individual tickets. If you already know what time you want to ride the trains, there may still be some Super Economy tickets left for your dates. Buy them at www.trenitalia.com

If you buy paper tickets at the station, be sure you validate those before getting on the train to avoid fines.

Add the apps for Italo and Trenitalia to your phone. You can buy from there and online tickets don't have to be validated.

Other than convenience, a train pass in Italy is -- generally -- not cost effective. Unless you are traveling great distances -- 3 to 5 hours - the Regional train system is super cheap and convenient. What is your tentative schedule?

A Rail Pass is not the most cost effective or convenient option for travel in Italy. If travelling on Regionale trains, buying P-P tickets is usually cheaper than a Rail Pass. However don't forget to validate locally purchased tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel or you'll risk hefty fines, which are collected on the spot. With a Rail Pass, you'd need to buy the compulsory reservations for the express trains (Freccia, Intercity) separately out-of-pocket or again face hefty fines.

Rail passes do not work for the Metro in Rome and other types of transportation, and locally purchased tickets also have to be validated in the machines for those.

There's often a long queue at the staffed ticket offices at rail stations, but it's very easy to buy tickets from the automated kiosks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPUB5O1tnqE . Plan your trips using the Trenitallia website so that you know what type of trains you'll be using and the other details. Italo Treno has a separate website. If you'll be travelling with a smartphone, you can also buy tickets using the Trenitalia app or another site such as Trainline.com - https://www.thetrainline.com/ (they sell tickets for both major rail networks in Italy as well as many others in Europe).

This is a bit dated but you may find it useful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n8rITO1Eek .

Also, if you are certain of your travel plans, by booking well in advance you can often find super-inexpensive fares.
