Train, point to point. If you buy the tickets in advance you can get really cheap "mini" fares.

I assume you are arriving in Rome and departing from Venice. You would not save any money with a rail pass. Trips too short and too few. Use the train a car would be an expensive handicap for those cities. Pompeii will be a very, very long day trip from Rome. You can do it but I generally would not recommend it.

I think Frank meant to include a "not". You would not save money with a pass. Do the train with p2p tickets.

We did a day trip fr Rome to Naples (we did Herculaneum tho, not Pompeii) and arrived back in Rome early evening...mind you, Herc is smaller then Pomp - we spent 2-3hrs there, then went up the top of Mt Vesuvius, which was anoth 90min-2hr. We also got started maybe by 9-9:30am fr Rome(took the faster train), missed our stop and had to wait 45min to get a train back to the proper stop, spent 45min eating lunch, and still got back to the city by 7pm-ish, so I think it's doable...now, I know Pompeii takes a lot longer to tour, and you can't just walk there fr the train stn, so I'm not sure how much time is in play there...
