What is the best (and cheapest) way to travel from Rome to Florence?

Train is the best, hitchhiking is probably cheaper but I would stick with the train.

Eurorailways is a ticket reseller. You'll pay more buying tickets from them than buying tickets at a station in Italy.

Trenitalia (Italian National Rail) lists these travel times and 2nd class fares: 4 hours on regional trains for €16.10, 3 hours on IC trains for €28.00, and 1 1/2 hours on EuroStar Italia trains for €44.00.

Stick to a regional train, it will take a bit longer but you'll save enough on the ticket to enjoy a nice lunch! Also with regional trains you can hop off and back on within a 5-6 hour period. While often you can save by booking before 21 days, I've noticed here the prices are the same the day before - and not all booked up (non-holiday is key).
