What's the easiest way to get from Firenze Rifredi train station in the northern suburbs to the Pitti Palace area?
Easiest way would be taxi, but it would cost up to 20 euro. Less expensive option would be the frequent 5 minute train ride to Santa Maria Novella train station and bus from there to Oltrano area. Someone recently said Rifredi to SMN is free for passengers arriving at Rifredi (ask when you buy your ticket), but at most is would cost just over 1 euro extra. If I remember correctly, elettrico D bus goes closest to Pitti Palace and also costs just over 1 euro.
Ditto Frank (and that was probably me who recently reported reading that you could travel free b/n Rifredi and SMN IF you trained into Florence). When you exit the SMN train station, there's a large bus terminal - you can get to wherever you need to go from the train station. There are also buses at Rifredi, but I don't know their routes...try 'Googling' for more info on the routes. We often rode the bus from SMN to very near the Pitti Palace - it's a very nice ride, and pretty cheap, too. At SMN we came across a place to buy tickets and pick up a bus route map, but unfortunately don't remember exactly where...I'm reading now to be sure and buy tickets BEFORE you get onboard...(they may just cost more from the driver - I can't find more info on that at this time). DON'T FORGET to validate your ticket at the front or back of the bus!!! It's really alot easier to do than I'm making it sound - seriously! Just ask the driver for confirmation that he's going where you WANT to go ;-)
