Travel in Europe Oct 4-30

I've put up a revised itinerary. I know it is full, but I overload it up front so people can see some of the places I'm looking at in hopes to see which are keepers and which can be deleted from people who have been there already.
Since I've narrowed it down to a verticle looking trip in Europe from the Rhine area down to Sicily in 27 days flying into Frankfort and out of Rome, I'm hoping for some input of what is a must do and what can be left to another trip. I've left a lot of questions on the revised post and hope some of you out there will respond to those questions. The topic is named: Revised trip Oct 4-Nov 1. Thx

Connie, Your proposed Itinerary seems somewhat "ambitious" for a 26 day time frame, and also a bit confusing. A few questions and comments..... > Are you referring to Gimmelwald or Grindelwald? They're both in the same general area, but some distance apart and very different in character. Also, neither is in the "Lucerne area". > You mentioned side trips in the Amalfi Coast to "Naples, Pompeii, Assisi". The Amalfi Coast is some distance from Assisi, so you might want to revise that. > As you're planning on renting a car for Italy, are you aware of the usual "issues" regarding driving in Italy? If not, post another note for further information. > It's not necessarily a "bad time of year" to be travelling, but especially in the Cinque Terre, many of the businesses will be starting to "wind down" at the end of the tourist season so things might be "quiet". > Rather than staying in Strasbourg, have you considered Colmar? It's a beautiful smaller town, and less "busy" than Strasbourg. Good luck with your planning!

It's a beautiful time of year to travel. We were in the places you are considering in Oct. 2010. Yes, we did get some rain and Muerren & Grimmelwald were shutting down, however, I enjoyed the cool weather and the lack of crowds. Pompeii was a pleasant mid-70's. Send me a personal message if you want the url for my blog about our trip in 2010.
